BONE

In 1991 writer, and artist Jeff Smith introduced to us the enchanting world of Boneville, and three cousins who get lost and end up in a mysterious valley. They meet many new friends and enemies there including dragons and other mysterious creatures. The Bone series was one of the most successful independent comics of all time, and this serialized book continued to grow in popularity until it's epic conclusion in 2004. Shortly thereafter, it was compiled into one monstrous 1300 page volume. It instantly sold out and was unavailable for a couple years without hunting after it and paying inflated prices on the secondary market.

Tomorrow, Bone the Complete saga has returned to print and will be arriving at Galactic Comics. This timeless classic is wonderful for all ages. If your any fan of fantasy, this book is an absolute must. It has all of the imagination of the Lord of the Rings, but with much more humor and heart.

MUST SEE MOVIES OF THE WEEK

The Sentinel is a fast past thriller, starring Michael Douglas, Keifer Sutherland, and Eva Longoria. When a plot to assassinate the President is uncovered, the evidence points to long time secret service agent Pete Garrison(Douglas). While being pursued by David Breckenridge(Sutherland), Pete must clear his name and stop the assassination of the Commander in Chief.

Friends with money is probably Jennifer Anniston's best work since the Good Girl. Working as a housekeeper in LA, Olivia(Anniston) is depressed, and unmotivated. Her friends are married and very well to do. With a great supporting cast of Joan Cusack, Catherine Keener, and Frances Mcdormand; Friends with Money manages to be humorous on the surface, but have very serious under-tones.

Take the Lead stars Antonio Banderas and is based on a true story of a former professional dancer who volunteers at a New York public school. At first their backgrounds clash, but he gradually wins the students over and together create a new form of dance, combining ballroom dancing, tango, with urban hip hop.

Come in tomorrow for these great DVD's, along with Akelah and the Bee, Stephen Kings Desperation, Zodiac, Albert Brooks Looking for comedy in a Muslim World, Desperate Housewives Season2, Arrested Development Season3, and Tick Season 1(yes, the much loved animated show from the mid 90's).

DMZ

I just had chance to read the first trade paperback of the sleeper hit DMZ. Written by Brian Wood(Global Frequency), DMZ tells of a near future where the U.S. military is spread so thin fighting many conflicts worldwide, that it neglects the buildup of radical militias in the states themselves. As a result, a civil war breaks out. New York is in complete chaos and is considered a demiliterized zone(DMZ)which is kind of a no man's land. Young photojournalist Matty Roth is thrilled to get an assignment with an experienced veteran crew in New York, but when their helicopter is fired upon, the crew is killed with the exception of Matt who has decided to stay on the job as it is a career chance of a lifetime. Matt soon realizes that everything he heard from the media is not necessarily true and learns many lies that came out of much of the political spin.

Brian Wood has created a very complex, gritty, and plausible world that given the state of the world today, doesn't seem in the least far fetched. We haven't learned all the details about the United States vs the Free States yet(which have only been referred to so far as New Jersey and inwards), but the set up has masterfully created an infinite amount of stories to come from this unlikely war zone.

The new JLA will certainly have the big 3(Batman,Superman,Wonder Woman) but who are the others? The title of the first story arc is Tornado's Path, so it's probably safe to assume Red Tornado must be connected somehow. Come in and get it today.

MUST SEE MOVIES OF THE WEEK

A bunch of great new movies this week. First up, is the Poseidon. When a luxury cruise line is turned upside down by a "rouge wave"(were talking huge here), a handful of survivors must struggle to survive by climbing up the hull to escape. This movie features an all star cast(Josh Lucas,Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossem, and Richard Dreyfus)and was directed by Wolfgang Peterson who is unmatched in sea story suspense (Das Boot, Perfect storm). The tension is unbelievable, and is an incredible remake of the 1972 classic that starred Gene Hackman, and Ernest Borgaine.

Silent Hill is based on a video game (which I never played), but is one of the eeriest and atmospheric horror movies I have seen in a long time. Rosa and her daughter Sharon are driving when they are pursued by a police woman on a motorcycle. A ghostly figure appears and the vehicles crash. When Rosa regains consciousness, her daughter has vanished. Rosa must now look for her daughter in the nightmarish town of Silent Hill. This movie was directed by French director Christopher Gans, whose popularity soared a couple years ago with Brotherhood of the Wolf.

Sketches of Frank Gehry is documentary by Sydney Pollack. Sydney is known more for his movies(1985 Best Director, Out of Africa) than documentaries, but being such a longtime friend of Franks, he was compelled to make it. Franks unusual building designs begin as simple doodles. He then makes little models with construction paper, scissors, scotch tape, and elmers glue as if he was in elementary school. His associates then design them on the computer (he doesn't know how to use one), and the end results are some of the most imaginative structures of the 21st century. Some of the contemporary masterpieces he is known for is the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angelas, and the Guggenheim Museum in Spain.

These 3 movies are released on DVD tomorrow, along with Just my Luck(Lindsay Lohan), Phat Girlz, On Native Soil(documentary of the 911 report), Lonely Ones, When do we Eat?, Conviction, MI-5 season 1, and House season2.

Haunted Mansion Comics

Recently, SLG received the publishing rights to produce a comic series based on one of Disney's most famous attractions, the Haunted Mansion. The result was a fun anthology series put together by their biggest talents such as Roman Dirge, Darren Frydenhall, and John Hastings.

The first 3 issues surpassed all expectations and quickly sold out everywhere. Good news though, Galactic Comics is receiving a restock of all 3 issues today. Issue #2 even has a guest appearance from Lenore(the cute little dead girl). Issue #4 is scheduled for a September release.

MUST SEE MOVIES OF THE WEEK

A couple great comedies this week. First up is the new Robin Williams movie "RV". In the tradition of National Lampoons Vacation, Robin Williams takes his family on a vacation through the Colorado Rockies in an RV. They have repeated encounters with the overly friendly Gornicke Family whose father is Jeff Daniels.

Director Barry Sonnefield(Men in Black, Adams Family, Wild,Wild West) brings us many laughs, along with breathtaking scenery.

Anna Faris and Rina Hall are back in Scary Movie4 to spoof more of the recent horror flicks such as Saw, War of the Worlds, Grudge, and the Village. Make sure you have seen the movies that they're spoofing first for maximum viewing enjoyment.

In L'enfant(The child), Sonia and Bruno are a young Belgium couple who just had a
baby boy. Bruno is a small time thief, who leads a group of kids to steel for him.
While Sonia is waiting on line at the welfare office, Bruno sells his newborn son on the black market. When he confronts Sonia as to what he has done, she collapses and needs to be hospitalized. "I thought we could have another one." Bruno explains as Sonia spits on him. In an effort to redeem himself, he attempts to recover the baby.

L'enfant is a powerful, emotional, and deeply moving.

Other new video releases this week are the HBO series Rome season one, I'll always know what you did last summer, Cape of Good Hope, Lemming, and Don't Tell.

BUBBA HO-TEP ACTION FIGURES-FOR ALL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS

You didn't think they would do it, but Bubba Ho-tep figures arrived. I am now a happy man.

If anyone out there hasn't seen the movie, I don't know what you're waiting for. Bruce Campbell plays an aging Elvis in a retirement home. You thought Elvis is dead? Wrong, the real Elvis switched with an imporsonator years back and it was the impersonator that died. When an ancient Egyptian Mummy shows up, our hero must battle it with the help of former president John F Kennedy (He's an old black man).

Galactic Comics have many of Bruce Campbells classics, including the "Evil Dead" series, and the most recent "Man with the Screaming Brain".

MUST SEE MOVIES OF THE WEEK

Here's an edge of your seat bank robbery picture from Spike Lee. You couldn't ask for better star power with Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster.

Clive Owen is in a cell in the beginning of the movie, discussing the perfect bank robbery. The movie flashes back as Clive Owen enters the bank with his associates, and takes all the bank employees and customers hostage.

Denzel is a detective, and Jodie Foster is someone who knows people, and can get things done. Don't expect a typical bank robbery picture, as the robbers motives might surprise you, especially if it's not about money.

Our favorite Blue collar comedian, now stars in his first Movie. Larry the Cable Guy is now a health inspector and when customers of the most upscale restaurants begin to get sick, Larry must find out why. You'll be laughing beginning to end.

If you have ever been a fan of the classic detective stories, such as the Maltese Falcon, or the Big Sleep, this movie is for you. Remember Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade. Now imagine him as a teenager in a modern day southern California high school.

Brendon(Joseph Gordon levitt) is loner who is trying to find out what happened to his missing ex-girlfriend. Everyone in the movie talks as if they were taken right out of a Dashell Hamett or Raymond Chandler Novel. Even though it is modern day, you will notice the absence of modern technology. You'll see a couple of cell phones, but notice how Brendon mostly uses the old style pay-phones, and messages to people are done on scrap paper instead of being emailed, or text messaged. There is also no modern music, just some eerie lounge jazz.

I can't tell you enough how much I loved this movie. The fast pace film noir slang and rhythmic dialog makes for the most unique movie experience. There is also kind of a Twin Peaks feel to it. The movie would probably be laughable if all of the talented actors didn't play it straight.

This is Director Rian Johnson's first film, and he will be definitly one to watch.
About a year ago, I was amazed by Joseph Gordon Levitts performance in "Mysterious Skin" and he has impressed me again.

MARVEL ZOMBIES

I told everybody, it would be here soon. Now everyone can stop bugging me. That's right, Marvel Zombies arrives this Wednesday. I know you've all been anxious, so be here early Wednesday to ensure your copy.

On an alternate Earth, a virus has turned everyone into flesh eating zombies, including all our Marvel Heroes. What makes this different from the typical Zombie story, is that they are fully aware of what they are doing. Their just too hungry to care. Plus all the heroes maintain their super powers. Things get really exciting when the Silver Surfer arrives on the scene as well.

Another horror masterpiece from critically acclaimed writer, Robert Kirkman, who is no stranger to the zombie genre. His "Walking Dead" is one of my favorites.

Hidden Treasure

Here is the latest masterpiece from Michael Haneke. Cache which translates to "hidden" is a nice disturbing tale of a happy couple who discover a video tape of their home on the front door step. The tapes become more frequent as the tension builds. George and Amy Laurent's lives soon begin to unravel as the disturbing events occur. The "secret" of this film I believe, requires the viewer to pay extreme close attention to the final scene. A brilliant French suspense thriller that will have you pondering for days to come.

Return to Labyrinth

20 years ago, Jim Henson brought to us Labyrinth, one of the most beloved fairy tales of all time. Sarah had wished her baby Toby away, and he was taken by Jareth the Goblin King. Sarah entered the Labyrinth world to rescue her brother, and was able to get him returned home because of her strong will and telling Jareth "You have no power over me".

Now Toby is a teenager, and unbeknownst to him, has had the goblins watching him and doing his will his whole life. Now Toby is brought to their world, and is prepared to take his rightful place beside Jareth as heir to the Goblin Kingdom.

This is a 3 issue series, done with a wonderful manga style, that will thrill all
who have cherished the original.

COMIC BOOK PICK OF THE WEEK

I can't believe that I have waited this long to pick up this book. I have been hooked on "Y the Last Man" since the day it came out. Brian Vaughan's writing makes for such a fun read that when his newer series the "Runaways" came out, I should have been the first to give that one a try.

Today, I read Runaways vol 1 for the first time, and now have a new addiction. When 6 teenagers accidentally find out that their parents are actually super villains in an evil organization called the Pride, they initially call the police. Unfortunately, everyone in LA seems to be on the "Prides" payroll so the teenagers runaway. Before doing this however, they learn that they have inherited their parents special abilities. Now they must confront their evil parents. This fresh fun new series also takes place in the Marvel Universe, so Spider-Man, X-men, and the Avengers are all "real" to them.

The best part of having waited awhile to start reading this great series, is that I now have 4 more volumes to read without the wait.
